Ingrown Toenail

What is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail, also known as onychocryptosis, is a common condition where the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin. This often results in pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. While any toenail can become ingrown, it most commonly affects the big toe.

Causes of Ingrown Toenails
Several factors can contribute to the development of an ingrown toenail, including:

  • Improper Toenail Trimming: Cutting toenails too short or rounding the edges can encourage the nail to grow into the skin.

  • Tight Footwear: Shoes that are too tight or narrow can press the toenail into the skin.

  • Injury: Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing it or experiencing repetitive pressure from activities like running or kicking, can lead to an ingrown toenail.

  • Genetics: Some people have naturally curved toenails that are more prone to becoming ingrown.

  • Poor Foot Hygiene: Not keeping feet clean and dry can increase the risk of developing an ingrown toenail.

  • Symptoms of an Ingrown Toenail

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness along one or both sides of the toenail

  • Redness and swelling around the affected area

  • Possible infection, characterized by drainage of pus and increased redness

Treatment Options
At Clare Foot Clinic, we offer a range of treatments for ingrown toenails, depending on the severity:

Home Care: For mild cases, soaking the foot in warm water, keeping the foot dry, and wearing comfortable shoes can alleviate symptoms. Gently lifting the nail and placing cotton or dental floss under it can also help.

Medical Treatment: For persistent or severe cases, our chiropodists may perform a minor surgical procedure to remove part or all of the affected toenail.

Preventing Ingrown Toenails
To prevent ingrown toenails, consider the following tips:

  • Proper Nail Trimming: Trim toenails straight across, avoiding rounded edges.

  • Appropriate Footwear: Wear shoes that fit well and provide adequate room for your toes.

  • Foot Hygiene: Keep feet clean and dry, and change socks regularly.

  • Protect Your Feet: Be cautious of activities that may cause trauma to your toes.
